on my '06 530i, there are two springs (one on each side) attached to the lid. There are 3 positions for the spring to attach to. Those springs are very strong, removing the spring is relatively easy; however, putting it back on takes lots of effort without tools.

I actually have adjusted my spring before. Before I started I remembered a story I heard about somebody slicing their hand on the spring. So I got some work gloves, about 4 wire hangers and a buddy to help. I took the four hangers and made a hook to use on the spring and pretty much pulled it back and pulled it to where I wanted it.Keep in mind it's a lot easier to lessen the tension on the spring than to tighten it. I had to tighten mine since I had a spoiler and the trunk finisher, so mine barely opened. Good luck tho.

I like it that way...

As mentioned, it's great if your coming to the car with a arm load of beer or groceries.

(mostly beer)...

Adjusting the spring on the driver's side helps, but the real fix is replacing the little shock on the passenger side, as mentioned above. See the details and part number here:Trunk shock replacemen

Pic of the drivers adjustable side. My pic of the passenger side piston is too large to upload but matches the pics already shown.

ACS replica spoiler with M5 trunk finisher slowed it down, opens so smooth now.

Hi & Thanks for the reply,

I tried adjusting the spring position but no go - Same issue. The weaker position brings it up slower, but still too quick.

Regards

Hi,
I had the same problem - Local BMW dealer wanter MORE THAN FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS for the Spring with the strut in it.

I found a supplier of the strut - It's a bit of a job getting it in there but who doesn't enjoy a challenge :-)

Here's the details.
