I was heading out of town with a co-worker/friend on business, but had to pick something up at my office on the way. So I parked out front of our office building, and left him in the car while I ran up.

When I came down, he explained that a taxi had pulled alongside and the passenger opened the door and dinged my left rear quarter panel, up toward the left rear taillight. There is a slight mark of white paint, and if you pay attention to the reflection from the surface, you can see a slight ding. It's my car's first blemish. Somebody else might not even notice it, but it's my car's first, and my friend had "custody" of the car while it happened.

The question is: what is the appropriate punishment for my friend?

He wrote down the license plate of the cab. That's it.

That won't help, because the driver didn't opened the door and he probably doesn't know who his passenger was.

Kick your friends a$$ ! At least !!

Get you friend in the passenger seat; proceed to 120 miles per hour; intentionally roll the car, passenger side first; scare your friend a bunch; and get a new 545.

I hate door dings.

If he's a friend, go buy him a beer and you'll both feel better.

As long as the paint is not chipped, you can get a 'paintless dent repair' for no more than $75. The repair should be absolutely perfect - you will not be able to tell where the dent was. I had this done on my Audi - with an 'egg sized' dent, and what I thought was a good scratch or scuff on the paint. After it was impossible to tell where the dent was. Check it out.

Look at it this way, if your friend was not there, what would have happened? I would forget about it.

It's tempting. He pretends he doesn't feel guilty about it, but he does feel really guilty, at least.
