So I had 2 engine mounts replaced a few months ago that was causing excessive vibration in steering wheel/cabin. It also produced a grumbling sound under load. Got it fixed and problem was no longer there. Then about 2 months later the same symptoms started back up with vibration and some sound under load. How could my engine mounts break twice? Is there some underlying problem causing my mounts to fail or faulty mounts or bad install or what!

What I would ask:
Did they replace ALL of the mounts?
How bad are the roads in your area, Geez?!?!?!?

If it really is the mounts failing, then I suspect the drive train is out of alignment and needs to be checked. They sound like a symptom, maybe not a cause......

I broke some on the old 540i and the reason was mainly how I drove the car..

Do you drive the car hard occasionally? Hard launches are a very good way to break them.

Did you purchase the vehicle new? If new, that is really strange, but if used, then maybe it was smacked in the front end pretty good before you purchased it.

yeah something else must be causing the mounts to break.

I had that problem on an X5 I purchased used. Turns out I should have gotten a accident check like Carfax(although I do not trust them much) on it as it was involved in a minor accident. That accident must have caused a misalignment either in the front frame or in the xdrive components. The problem was recurring so I traded it in on the 5 I have currently.

I'm having nearly identical experience to yours. I had rumbling/vibration in cabin and dealer replaced two motor mounts (I believe they said there were only two but I always thought there were more... anyway) and the noise went away. Now the noise is back - same noise. Happens regardless of being in park, neutral, or drive, AC on or off. I'm going to take it back in in a week or so and see what they say.

I bought the car used last Nov so haven't had it a year yet - factory warranty about to expire but have CPO/extended warranty.

Well I floor it to 7k multiple times daily almost every day since day 1-not kidding just being honest. Have not had a problem with anything except the recall of the cylinder head/lifter and replaced my head.

Is that enough to break mounts? How does a car wtih 500hp than survive the mounts not breaking then? With 255hp even flooring it should not put even a third of the stress as a 550 going moderatly hard

Yep, that could do it. Spinning it up that high quickly can put a lot of strain on the mounts. There are other stronger mounts out there made of polyeurothane. They are definitely stronger, but at the expense of feeling more engine vibration in the car.
