The 'neighbor' theory seems to be most sense to me. Everyone's got a neighbor who hates your guts and this seems like the perfect 'let's take something out and let him blow up his engine when he drives' type crime.....

I bet that ECU will wind up on Ebay or Craig's list!
Many thieves are finding it easy and trouble free to steal and post! I think Ebay has an email address to report the theft so their security department can monitor for such items?
I'm surprised your headlights didn't go ... there's a huge market for conventional and high-performance lighting! I have read that Lexus's have them removed/stolen while parked at mall parking lots all the time.

it is odd but if its stolen then its a friend of yours or someone you know did it, and I really doubt a BMW 545i owner would make such efforts for a $1 grand ECU

People put in orders for parts and then they are stolen. It happened to be the ECU but could have just as easily been an airbag, seats, a door or whatever else was on the list. Shady bodyshops will place orders for parts that are stolen then used to repair vehicles. Rather than stealing to put on Ebay, the sale occured prior to the theft and the part was then "collected".
PS. Whether the story seems fishy or not is a matter of opinion, but accusing someone of being a liar and a cheat is a serious allegation. Seems like a rush to judgement IMO.

On order: 535xi Platnium Grey with Black interior, Step Auto, Sports package, Premium package, Cold weather package, 18" wheels, Logic 7, Comfort access, ipod adapt, Navigation, Sat radio, Rear spoiler, Extended Clear coat bra.
So given everyone's opinion on this matter and the individual, where is he? What's happened to date? Who worked on his car recently and where the hell is the ECU, I don't even know and it's my 3rd bimmer. This person had to have knowledge of the car and possibly know the victim. At this point it's not even a larceny it's a felony burglary. I think it's someone he knows or an acquaintance from a distance, if this really happened.
