did you remove the cabin filters? I would check inside the cabin filter area and also the air filter box. Another one to check is the lower splash shield. Animals like the warmth of the engine and tend to make homes in there. sometimes they get caught in the lower splash shield as well.

Does the car need to be running to produce the smell? And if so, does the engine need to be hot?

Could be bad gas. Fuel I mean. When did you fill up last? Did you put any fuel injector cleaner or anything in the tank?

Lots of suggestions in that lot!

- Particulate filter has another 88,000 miles to go, so hopefully unrelated.

- Cabin filters - yes, I took these out and cleared the odd leaf.

- Cats - x2. Still alive and well and there isn't a smell in the engine bay at all.

- Forgot to add that the outside temperature here is around 0C (32F) so unlikely that a small creature would rot so quick.

- Fuel - I did fill up recently with standard supermarket diesel as I usually do. No additives.

This morning the smell was there at start up and then went. At lunchtime, I didn't start the car but let the fan run - nothing. I started the car but didn't move off - nothing. I drove off - nothing?! For some reason it wasn't occurring this lunchtime. Hopefully it's gone as quickly as it came, but I will no doubt see over the next couple of days.

If all else fails, I will get one of those anti-bacterial air con cleaning services and see if it's heater matrix related...

I will report back on what happens.

Thanks for all your suggestions so far (serious or otherwise...)

Ian.

i know what it is i had a similar problem on my infiniti. i bet , you have a bag or some plastic stuck on the bottom of your car everytime you drive the heat in the bottom burns another piece and the smell comes up go to anyplace that cpuld lift your car like you getting an oil change and see if there is some black oily stuf or a physical bag or piece of plastic stuck.

Sat in the car first thing Friday morning. Ignition on, fan on, engine off and stone cold. The most terrible strong smell ever. Girlfriend couldn't stand it and nearly sick! Definately bad egg smell to it. Had to evacuate!!! I can only think I have some rather nasty bacteria growing in my heater matrix???

Will probably have to take it to the dealer and get a air con cleaning type service from them...

If it is this, I am still baffled as to why it's happened and how it started so quick. No subtle increase in smell, just yuk one day...
