My brakes very hard to press and stop the last 5 feet! HELP

My brakes were changed last year, my fluid is topped up...when i brake near a stop its reeeallly difficult to stop and i almost have to slam on the brake to stop the car!! a garage near my place doesnt know and told me to go to the dealership....i would like to avoid this option at all costs

help/adivce anyone?

i'm willing to bet the vacuum pump is broke. i actually do'nt think it's terribly expensive at the dealer to fix.

Do you have a V-8 car? If so there was a recall on those for the brakes, check it out.

pretty much anytime power assist brakes have a hard pedal, it's due to a vacuum issue of some sort.

Search the forums for the brake recall. This could be the culprit.

I'll be interested in what you find out, as I to have this problem. I took my 545i in the other week and they said I had no oil in the system, so they just performed the very limited repair on the brake system, but I ahve the same breaking problem. I was told though that the booster has a leak, and repairs would be around $1300. Be prepared for a shock on the price, and let us know what they say. The booster is not covered under the recall and so you have to pay. GL...

i have a 545i, and the dealership takes a week for an appoinment in toronto there so busy!
