Sunday my wife got in the car to run errands and saw this. Needles to say, in my 3 month old 5er this was quite distressing. Anyone had any windshield work done, cracks repaired, windshield replaced? Any ideas on cost? I presume someone broke it (threw a rock or something like that) but could it be a flaw in the glass that BMW might cover.

Check for any obvious impact points from road debris or vandalism. If there is none, bring it to your dealer. A number of folks have reported stress cracks that appeared out of nowhere. Many have been replaced under warranty, though some dealers (at least here in the U.S.) have argued against warranty replacement.

If there is no evidence of a stone impact take it to the dealer. Several people seem to have been experiencing stress induced cracking of the windshield. The windshield in modern cars has become a structural element (to some degree) and does see loads. They are also made as thin and as resilient as possible for weight and pedestrian/impact reasons. It's also possible the HUD windshields may specifically have a problem. A defective or improperly installed windshield might be the cause and would then be a warranty repair issue.

I had a 8 inch "L" shaped crack in the lower right side of the front windshield. There were no rock marks or anything like that. My dealer replaced it under PUMA. My dealer said he's replaced about 10 of them thus far.

I have had two new screens in mine both as a result of stone/ rock chips! Don't no how much they cost as my company picked up the bill for both. Replacement was carried out by third party windscreen specialist using OEM BMW screen.

I had a crack in mine as well. Took it to the dealer and they said they would not repair it, it was not stressed. basically blew me off. I waited for a BMW rep to visit the dealer and went back for a second opinion. Replaced it for free!

I have the "L" stress crack as well. Passenger side starting from the roof line. Taking it in tomorrow for replacement and will insist on warranty coverage. When I sechedule my appointment the SA said she had four calls that day for the E60 windscreen.

Mine went after one weeks ownership. They changed it ok on the insurance but on the passenger side they couldn't fit the snap on cover that runs along the upright edge. Make sure you check its fitted properly!

From the picture, there seems to be an impact spot which suggests that something or someone other than product defect caused the crack.

Where? Looks like a reflection from the plane (internal surface) of the crack itself to me.
