My Ride: BMW 545iA Black Sapphire
Model Year: 2005
Engine: 545i

Got from my dealer the Chassis number ( VIN ) of my 545i, which is being built
at Dingolfing this week ... I need it for some paperwork.

Looking at the 10th number which as I understand it should be the model year..it has a 0 ( zero ). Should it not be a 4 ( as in 200 4 ? )
Parity check comes up OK. If I change it to 4 - I loose the validity of the sequence..

What's the story? Dealer can't tell me if it's a MJ2005 - so I have to wait on the
wood trim in the middle console until I get back from holidays.

Would appreciate any feedback

Andy

Mine is a also a 4, Andy. Maybe you are getting a 2010!! Well, maybe not, but since it does not have a 4, odds are that you have the added wood trim.

MY2005 production started Sept 1st. If it's being built this week you'll have an 05. 100%.

Thanks Lomag!!! yeah..according to my order it has the following info:

Production week 37
Delivery week 39

Nonetheless, would still like to figure out the 0 as the 10th digit in the VIN.
I mean model year 0? If in fact it's a MJ2005 what would go in it's place. 5?
Wouldn't make sense since it's still been manufactured in the calender year 2004....

The model year is not fixed to the calendar year. MY2005 cars start being built in September (maybe sometimes in August). Many factories take a holiday break in August and use that as the changeover between model years.

It could be just a typographical error, or maybe it is just during the MY changeover, so they left it to be set by which year it is produced in. However that last idea doesn't make much sense since you have to pay the cost of the car based on a specific year model, since they usually increase in the succeeding year.

Did you order/pay for 2004 or for 2005 model pricing?

I paid definitely for 2004. The effective price list used was March 2004.

I don't think it's a typo, since the parity check ( check digit ) is correct and the sequence goes invalid if I change anything...

I asked the dealer for the definite VIN - because I have to start some paperwork..
so surely they must be giving me something valid and correct...

Thanks for the input !!!

We'll see I guess soon enough...it's just that I'm starting to get the pre-delivery
jitters ...I just need to know.....
