The car is more than 4 years old and and because it doesn't get driven every day, the time/date and trip odometer Zero out every so often, probably due to a weak battery. This was confirmed my the service manager at the local dealership.
Sound like a new battery is in order. I called Sears and they have a couple different DieHard's, and I heard that Interestate makes a good one too.
Any recommendations?

Hmmm...did you have them test it with a tester? Sometimes a nice full recharge will take care of it. Go to Pep boys and have them test it, then you know what to do. Oh yes despite what Pep boys guys tell you "they do not have a battery that is suitable for e60" it might work for 3 months and then it craps out. If you do a search you will see my opinion about batteries in general.
Good luck with your quest for battery!

Our E60 had the same symptoms with the clock/date and it was driven 400 miles/week, 95% freeway. The vehicle wouldn't start one day... two soon to be hungry toddlers in the car and 50 miles from home. Turns out it was a bad cell in the battery (3 yrs old). BMW covered it under warranty but I think only because the computer showed it had been driven regularly. Kinda irks me the BMW has this "advanced" charging system that needs to be programmed to the AGM battery but it only lasted 3 years. My Lexus has a 7 year old lead acid battery with a conventional charging system. I'm looking at changing the battery now though as 7 years is pushing it. But the OEM Lexus battery has been abused far more than the BMW AGM battery, it sits running an onboard fridge 48hrs at a time.

You'll need to decide if you want to deal with the battery registration issue.
Best of luck!

Duralast from AutoZone works great. No registration. No problems after more than 2 years. I think registration is a bogus "requirement" unless you make a significant change in battery technology (conventional to AGM) or capacity.
