UPDATE:

So the reason for my car losing time is a "defective battery." A month or so ago, my car did not start and they had to charge the battery and gave me that lame reason that I basically do not drive my car enough and/or my trips are too short. Doesn't it seem obvious that my car is draining power from the battery for some reason?!?
I will pick up my car today. Any suggestions on my approach with the SA?

Anyone heard of an accurate Windows clock?
I am not sure if this works in Finland, but go to Control Panel > Date & Time > Internet Time. Find a check a check box to sync PC time with a choice of several "atomic" clocks.

My PC keeps excellent time that jibes with two Magellan GPS units. (+/- a few seconds)

Trickle charger?

Yeah, but why should I have to do that?! That seems ridiculous to me.
Anyone else think that?

I do agree, seems ridiculous. But if it will save these bothersome rips to the dealer, why not. Think member westcoast550i ended up getting one for his LCI 550i

But fortunately BMWs do not run on Windows or MSFT platforms.

I dunno - lately M$ has gotten rave reviews with it's Sync software in Ford vehicles. I gotta admit, I rented an Edge and the Sync interface was pretty sweet. Pairing my phone was effortless and voice-controling songs on a thumb drive I popped in was heavenly. And, no "Illegal Operation" errors lol.

Sometimes I think the computers in our cars need more "juice" from the battery than gas to run the engines . There is lots of electrical activity going on in our cars behind the scenes when they are NOT running .

Knowing this I have a Battery Tender hooked up to my 5 year old 330cic that is a part time car I drive usually only in good weather sometimes weeks in between (hey it's a convertible ) and I still have a perfect original battery because of the Battery Tender doing it's job.

As for my 530xi when I first got it I realized there is TEN times more electrical activity going on than my 330cic because of iDrive, the CCC and TCU computers always running in the background, whether the car is running or not. The first time I saw the battery for the E60 I thought it was a marine battery (almost DOUBLE the size of my 330cic battery) used for a trolling motors on bass boats it looked so big Anyway since i drive the 530 almost everyday I don't use a Battery Tender on that vehicle although I should probably trow a quick connect plug on it in case.

Lastly, my BMW R1200C motorcycle has a Gel Cell battery that requires a special Battery Tender (higher cell voltage in Gel cell batteries) which I use. Again after 5 years NO problems with the original battery because of the Battery Tender .

Moral of the story- get a Battery Tender (made by Deltran- the BEST) and use one if you don't drive your BMW's that often. It is very easy to hook up a permanent "pig tail" plug to connect/disconnect the unit from your battery in seconds. Result, no more dead batteries
