My car is in for service and they gave me a 535i loaner. I was rather excited - and here are some random observations:
- The loaner drives like a completely, totally different car. It has no sports package and no active steering - feels like going from a go-cart (my car) to a "normal" car...I drove the same roads back and I had to back off and the tires started to whine where I could go full blast with my car (which has snow tires on...)
- The twin turbo is awsome, fuel consumption seems to be about the same (over 40 miles)
- The automatic shifts rather sudden and a bit jerky
- I miss my HUD already

Its the regular auto. I just drove it again for ~ 1 hour and the shifts under acceleration can be rough. I cannot drive smoothly with it. Maybe I am just so used to my manual.

All BMW automatics should be drivien in Sport mode. Normal drive mode is way too shift happy. I also agree a sport package BMW should be mandatory for ownership.

Iam just amazed at the difference with and without the sports package. The ARS and the A/S really work. Its like driving two completely different cars

It's not just the sport package. I drove an LCI 2008 550i Sport with the 172s and a sport auto. It too drives like a completely different car than mine, which is very similar to your car.
