I would suggest snow tyres as many have mentioned!
Living in a very snowy and cold climate of Russia using snow tyres for us is a must, but even below 45 degrees your summer tyres can't grip as well any more! i have Continental Winter Tyres TS 810!! i would highly reccomend them! And if that is not sufficient get tyres with spikes
Good on icy roads, but worse on dry

My Ride: BMW 530D M Sport
I have Pirelli winter tyres 235/18, we have lot of snow right now and more to come... The car looks almost as nice as in summer and no problems at all in any kind of conditions. Of course I can?t stop uphill when raining snow, otherwise going backwards is only way... But so, very good also in poor conditions.

Iceman, Kigerka and others how was Your Wed? I came through night past Nurnberg and Wien to Budapest. There was some hills I had trouble to get up because of snow, 50/60kph max and even slight push made rear wheels spin (before DSC made that grounding sound). 
Winter tyres are really appreciated in that kind of weather. Mine are in Finland.

in the snow i leave the bmw and Merc behind and drive a front wheel drive Fiat Punto goes well in the snow

I'm in Boston. 525 w/o snows. We just had 24+" of snow over the weekend and another 6" yesterday. My drive to work is over a two lane back road. I had been using DTC, but stopped to get some washer fluid and forgot to turn it back on. Slipping and sliding all over until I remembered it. Switched it back on-- smooth as silk.
So my advice: DTC, DTC, DTC!!!
