I recently installed a CD multiplayer in the glovebox following my dealers response that it would work as all the connections were in place.
However, they forgot to inform me that I need to have software updates to make this work and are advising approx 20 updates with a large price tag!

Is there any way around this?...

`fraid not, unless you know some one with an autologic system that is, with autologic you should be able to apply just the cd-changer software, if not its the dealer and a complete car update

How large a price tag? It shouldn't be large, just big enough to be annoying (i.e. ?100 or so).

You should find an independent shop to do the work for you. I have a shop here in Houston (yes, I know that you are in the U.K.) that does the activation in one hour for about $100. The dealer wants $300 and all day. There is some legitimacy to the dealer pricing as they have to update all of the software and it generally takes most of a day.

Good luck.
