MPG indicator abnormal reading

I have just fixed my car due to a blown engine gasket. The engine head is also warped. Everything is fixed now, but something is weird about the MPG indicator.
Before I come to complete stop (while driving) the indicator goes all the way up to 12 MPG, I don't remember it being like this. I remember when I stop reving, the MPG goes back to 50 MPG which is on the very left side of the indicator. It's also shifting funny sometimes, like the timing isn't correct. I would be going from 30miles to 50miles / hour the gear shift sort of delayed or early...
