I'm betting that they reset the onboard computer while driving on an interstate. I have seen 30-32mpg that way as long as I was on level ground. I regularly see mid to upper 20s in my mixed driving commute. If I fill up on/near a highway such as the NJ turnpike, I'll reset, pull out and by the time I hit Connecticut my MPG is usually around 28.

As we got on the highway I reset the trip computer until we got to the destination. And yes, it was all highway miles and stopped in a small town to get some snacks at a store but that was it.
On a regular basis I average around 18 mpg (city and some freeway). My wife averages about 21 mpg in her 335i.

A few weeks back we took a trip to Upstate New York. Running at a steady 80 mph using cruise control I found my mileage to be 28+. I have a 2010 528i Xdrive. If I slowed to 70mph it went up a little to 29+. I'm confidant that if I kept it at a steady 65 it would approach 30. But I couldn't do it. It just drives too nice at 80+ so I sacrifice a bit of economy. I've been using premium fuel of various brands but mostly Hess when I'm around home. On a long trip to South Carolina last month a got bold and tried a tank of regular to see if it showed any measurable difference. I found nothing detectable and fuel economy was the same. I've been using premium with that one time exception. I'm satisfied with my performance and economy. Plenty of OOOOomph if I want/need it and I don't feel so guilty about fuel consumption either. Good compromise. All measurements are using the on-board electronics.
