The sensor is mounted in the headliner just behind the sunroof (the rear map lights are part of the sensor assembly).
It will go off if you wave your arms enough -- I don't think the system is designed to protect the contents of the car if you park it with the windows open though...
subterFUSE, maybe you don't know the answer to this but did they steal your Lexus by starting the engine or did they just lift it up and take it?
If you are referring to the black plastic thing that sits behind the centre rearview mirror, it is the sensor for your rain-sensing wipers.
No, it is in the upper, right hand corner of the windshield, at least in the USA where the driver?s seat is on the left. It is flat, black and square, perhaps with ribbed edges if I can remember correctly. It has a wire leading into the headliner. I know where the light sensor is for the auto-dimming mirrors and for the auto-headlamps ? that is right on the rearview mirror.
Someone mentioned that it is a light and temperature device? I think the light sensor is on the rearview mirror, where it attaches to the windshield (for the auto-headlamps), while the auto-dimming sensor is located on the rearview mirror, the bottom middle of it. The temperature thermometer is by the AC control knobs, one for each person. Maybe it?s for the outside temperature?.......

Car was driven.? Police tried to pull the guy over because he tore ass out of the hotel parkinglot, and he led them on a high-speed chase through downtown Atlanta.? He eventually crashed into a parking garage, and ran away on foot.? He got away, because the cop chasing him was a typical fat, Georgian, tub-of-lard cop.

I think it is that thing in the upper right hand corner of you windshield.? Waste of money if you ask me.? Someone could reach in and steal the contents of your glovebox or anything sitting on your seats (if you're windows are open) and be gone before the alarm goes off......

The alarm WILL immediately go off, if the windows are broken, because that makes a different sound and motion!
The sensor is a acoustic detector - desinged to pickup breaking glass or other loud noises. The car has a tilt sensor for detecting being lifted as well. Secondarily the car has switch sensors on all monitored openings - doors, trunk, hood; these compose a multiple array of security intrusion detection alarming. Most likely uses a piezo mic for acoustic. Piezo (ceramic based) sensors are used for the driver and reciever for the PDC system as well. Any pressure/acoustic wave can set off the sensor - i.e., waving your hands or a pet jumping around.
I found the following information today and remembered this thread. The following .pdf is a complete overview of the alarm system and goes into detail about how the motion sensor works (it's actually quite interesting to read about how "smart" it is...)
As always, use the [more] links and the back button (or the bookmarks) to get around...
