In US specifications, the 545 had 325 hp.

The following page shows the different engines (although I think we need to get the 535i added to the page...Lomag?)

Question

How comes the US market gets less power in their Bmws? Over here a friend of my brothers has M3 E46, and has 320bhp, and then i spoke to a person in Philladelphia, and he had the same year M3, And his was 260bhp, i take it that in the E60 the power is less in the US Also.

Can someone tell me how muchBHP a USA 535d and 530d have then.

Also memebers im having my new exhaust system put in today also will have some pics by wednesday, will post them as soon as i have them.

Thank you in advance, to anyone that may know the answer to this

The 545 has 325 peak hp and 330 peak ftl/lbs. The 535 has 300 hp and 300 ft/lbs, but its the area under the curve through the rev range that make the 535 competitive to the 545/550.

While there have been a few marketing and technical reasons for hp differences in the past, Most of the power differences seen between Europe and the US stem from the more stringent and pessimistic method used to measure power in the US.

You also have to be cautious about comparing power claims between model years, as the standard has been changed from past versions. This is most apparent when you look at classic late-60s muscle cars. If tested using modern techniques, their power claims are significantly lower than the original advertised numbers.

There also have been recent changes to address a few Japanese automakers that were inflating power numbers using loopholes in the testing procedures. (I think Mazda was one culprit, and Nissan may have been involved as well. However, I'm not 100% certain.)

In re: US vs European differences - there was a time when emissions regulations were much stricter in the US so HPs were lower (in the US). There was also a time when the market in the US didn't favor higher HP (for whatever reason). The "euro spec" M3s were quite different. I believe the exhaust manifold was smaller in the US. Then they threw on some cats (which weren't in Europe) and you had a lot less power.

Today - I don't believe there is any real difference in power - just measuring differences.

The differences are largely due to slight differences in the measurement scales. One of your friends is probably a little confused, US and EU model years aren't always in sync but no same model year E46 M3 would have had a 60hp difference between US and EU spec. Any differences would have been marginal. E46 M3 in the US had around 333 hp if I recall correctly. US didn't get all the models (don't think the US got the CSL for example) but the engines should have been pretty similar. Another example of measurement differences comes up in MPG numbers. The US gallon is about 20% smaller than a UK gallon too, so US mpg numbers often look worse than they really are as they are understated compared to their UK counterparts.

As for the 535d and 530d, they're not not available in the US so we can't give you any US numbers (current models can't pass the emissions tests in the states that apply CARB, but 50 state legal diesels are expected to be available next year).
