I've had the same problem in the past (there are threads somewhere on here started by me on it), and they were eventually traced to the rear seat-chassis mounting and contact, especially when the car body flexes when making a turn, going over speed humps, etc.

From memory, my dealer sorted it by removing the rear seats, cleaning the mountings up, laying down padding and then reinstalling the rear seats. That sorted out the noise almost totally.

yes! that's almost exactly what they found and procedure the same. So far, about 95% fixed, no more creaking (MOST annoying) still a bit rubbing noise but tolerable now. Just hope it doesnt come back. This is wonderful how we can all share in these diagnostic dilemmnas, and help each other out, as the dealers/technicians I'm afraid are often not diligent enough to solve these problems that they subjectively feel are not important...although extremely important for an owner!

It's not a 100% permanent fix to be sure. I've just got done carting 3 people around in the back on extended trips and I think the additional padding/lining they put in there has worn down a little. Booking it back in for another look (approx. 1 year after the original complaint was sorted)

Dealers need to be trained

After almost 4 years with my E39 and 1.5 years now with my E60, my SA has learned that I will come in 3 times in as many weeks over every rattle and squeak, and that I will check that they have sorted out each complaint. I once took the car back in to them within 2 hours of collecting it because I felt that they hadn't solved the problem. He knows... and he knows I'm serious about maintaining my car, so they really do their darndest to find and fix whatever I've raised.

Rear seat/rear shelf area creaks like an old wooden boat when making left turns under certain circumstances when the car 'flexes' up incline/ decline then left turn. Driving me nuts Any one else with same problem (NOT from the door seals as that's been replaced / teflon taped, etc with no improvement). Is it reasonable if I ask the dealer to try replacing the shelf and/or seats? ongoing problem for 2 yrs now.
+1

The creaking from the back seat is terrible backing out my inclided driveway the the shaking the car makes over the curb to the street. Like an old wooden box I right!
