I get the same thing when I close from tilt.? The problem is it does not happen all of the time.? I have not addressed the issue yet as I figured I wait until the car got a little older and see what happens.
I saw one post regarding closing from tilt.? Is the original post concerning closing from tilt or from full open?

By the way I have the same thing when closing from tilt. It seems to be worse when the car has been outside in the sun for several hours. Didn't do it a few weeks though, even when it was already hot outside (don't remember it anyway and the first time it did "pop" it definitely got my attention!). Looks like a fairly common problem from all the comments here. I'll add it to the list: occasional transmission slam, radio on when starting, steering wheel not returning to proper tilt postion, ... Still a great car.
My original post was regarding to the closing from tilt. Closing from full open is fine and quiet. Problem is only with tilt.

My roof only makes the noise when closing from tilt positon.
Also, your radio and steering wheel problems are fixed by software update 18.
It sounds like I should just tell my dealer not to bother with replacing my sunroof, then?
Seems like it will just continue to have the problem, and changing a sunroof sounds like a rather invasive procedure to undertake... especially if it won't have good results.

Yep, I'm a little over a month away from 7,500 miles at which point I'll take it in for an update (although 19 should be coming pretty soon?).

Since last week, whenever I close the moon roof, there is a loud "cracking" noise.? It sounds like crushing nut when closing the moon roof.
Operation of the sun roof is fine and quiet.? However, the closing of the moon roof makes me concern.? I seldom use the moon roof and the car is only 9 months old.
Any suggestion is appreciated.

I have had the same experience. I heard the noise when closing the sunroof from the tilt position on a very hot Florida day. It still makes a crack or "thunk" sound most of the time. It started right after I got the car back from the dealer for the 10,000 mile service. Now the sound is not as loud, but still very noticeable and also lags behind the closing by several seconds!?

BTW, I too get a very distinctive sound like there's a nut or screw hitting the glass when closing from tilt position. My ride is only 9 months old also. I've had too many problems with the E60 so far.

[/quote]As far as I know (correct me if I'm wrong), moon roof == tilt position. Sun roof == full open position. Years ago, some car's only came with moon roof no sun roof. Therefore, these cars could only open the roof window in tilt position. I haven't seen this kind of roof window for a long time in USA. I still see some in Europe and Asia.

I get the same noise when closing mine from tilt also. Sounds like something is going to snap off.

Incredibly, I first noticed this on my '06 525ki today (4000 miles). It has been hot out here lately, for sure. Same symptoms, cracking sound when closed from tilt...really coincidence that I shoud sign on to the forum and see this issue...I'll report it at my first service...Good luck, let us know how you make out?

Sun roof is a non-glass, metal only slide and tilt opening in the roof. Moon roof is a glass slide and tilt opening. That's my understanding.

Can anybody tell me the difference between the moon roof and sun roof?
