I am not sure how many of you guys have that foam engine cover thing on the underside of your hood that is supposed to silence engine sound as well as smother a fire I believe. However I noticed every loaner car I get does no thave that thing on it so I ripped mine off months ago and it definetly let more of the sound out that was suppressed by this. I also looked around online and sounds like most cars do not use these anymore. I believe it was more for sound suppression in the 5 series more than anything which explains why they did not have it on any of the 3ers loaners.
I suspect it also lets your engine work a tad cooler too by letting more heat escape since it is a pretty thick foam cushion. Anyway just lets that beautiful sound more audible from either the I6 or growling V8 |
It's been discussed here also.

the bmw exhaust note sounds good, the engines usually dont sound so great themselves. the ONLY reason i would take this off is to hear my turbos a little better. this is pretty pointless and counter intuitive for anyone else honestly. even with the TT on my car, i have no desire to hear a bmw engine noise any more then i already have to. again, the exhaust note is what you want to hear, not the clakity clak of a bmw engine

This makes my car sound awesome.

What are you talking about? You think it is the exhaust of your car that sounds good? No it is the engine sound of the air getting sucked in, especially with turbo's. Your exhaust is minimal contributory to the cool sound of a bmw

   guess i wont ask your advice when buying exhaust. if i need to amplify the sound of my valve tap, i'll PM ya. although the CAI sound and turbos are cool. your statement was just way off par IMO |

Has anyone actually removed this? I read the referenced thread and didn't find anyone who pulled it off. I personally would be concerned if its there to give passengers extra time in case of a fire....I wonder if my car has this? Gonna check later....
