I know the book calls for 5W-30, but does anyone see the harm in changing to Mobil 1 0W-40 European Car Formula? I used it religiously in my former Audi's. They've now improved the formula, and it has always met the European standards,(ACEA3, I believe). Besides, I refuse to use Castrol SYN-ROT in any car I own.

Thanks! Other than a marketing ploy, why on Earth would BMW recommend Freakin' Castrol? Now, the German made 0-W30 is good stuff, I understand, but the blends we get in this country are one step beyond sheep urine.

By the way, E60Speed, I'm planning on getting an E90 sometime in the fall, and i read that BMW is going to be bringing in a lot of them to the US from the South Africa plant. Now, you are probably a little biased, but should I insist on one made in Deutchland, or are the SA ones just as good? To me, a real Bimmer is made in Germany. Your thoughts?

I dont know what you get there in the USA , but the Castrol here is some of the best stuff you get.

The Castrol TXT LL01 5w-30 and new Castrol SLX LL04 0W-30, Castrl TXT LL04 5W-30 were specifically formulated for BMW

BMW reccomends castrol because they are there Formula 1 partners, and castrol makes oils specially for BMW ( TXT, SLX and TWS )

I would insist on one from South Africa

Really

For more than 5 years in a row the plant here has won the BMW award for the best produced cars in the Group. Australia reported when they switched from German produced to SA produced cars the problems that needed rectifying after production reduced by 80%.

They produce the cars at a slower rate here than in germany, giving them more time to do a quality job

They have been supplying E46 325i to the USA since the model came out.

All the above information is freely known here and been reported in the press and by BMW many times.

I wouldn't buy a BMW if it wasn't made in Germany. And I won't keep buying German cars if they don't keep the quality up.

Castrol just doesn't have a good reputation among the oil "junkies" in this country. However, the German made 0-W30 is something of a cult status here among the oil freaks. The stores that stock it have it hoarded as soon as it hits the shelf, but the US 5W-30 collects dust until they offer it at a sale price.
