I drove today for about 120 miles in varying traffic conditions to a meeting (M25 & M1 which are pretty slow/stop start/fast in the south of the UK) and was aware I was getting a pretty good MPG reading. Average speed was 53mph and I filled up just off the motorway I checked the computer for miles left in the tank and is all I can say.
Pretty good for 535D I would say (and yes, that does read 799!)
Can anyone beat that?

That seems a bit optimistic. Id be amazed if you got 600 in reality unless you spend the whole 800 miles in free flowing motorway traffic. On my 520d it normally predicts approx 700 when I fill up, but its more likely to do around 640 - still 8 litres or so left at that time.
Also, on my car, it read approx 10% optimistic on mpg count from the factory until you trim it with hidden menu built into the dash. You might do a mere 720 miles

I think to be fair it is a tad optimistic.
I probably got about 650 miles to the tank today (which I'm still very happy with) as I drove home in excess of 70mph, but at a steady speed and driving carefully.
Still, looks bloody good on the computer!
BTW 1226km range is only 761.801 081 682 562 miles (to be exact ) - I win so far

they should bring the diesel version here in the states. would love to have something past 400 miles.
Maximum 350 miles er tank and with gas now at ?1.06 per ltr (circa $8+ per gallon) I was tired of 'burning' money.
When the diesel comes to the US you guys will love it.
For sure, it's not as fast as a 550 and it doesn't sound anywhere near as good, but it's a great package and I still think it's one of my all time favourite cars I've owned (and I am comparing it to a Boxster S and 996 in this case!)

I'm really jealous!
In the USA we'll have to wait a while to get access to the benefits of BMW's high performance and high economy diesel engines.
With gentle highway driving my 530xi delivers about 26mpg. In mixed city /highway driving it drops to 22-23mpg for slightly less than 400 miles before dipping into the fuel reserve zone.
