Default Metallic "Tink" When Drivetrain is Loaded/Unloaded?

Any other E60s hearing a metallic "tink" when the drivetrain is loaded and unloaded?

It is most prevalent in slow speed situations with frequent application of throttle-on/throttle off. I've also noticed it doesn't do it when the car has been sitting for a while, but after I've driven it'll start doing it at random.

I took it to my local BMW indy shop and he: "thinks it might have something to do with the u-joint, but it doesn't sound like anything to worry about until it gets worse or starts causing vibrations."

2008 MT 550 with 90k miles

Any other help or recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks!

It doesn't take much for them to get under the car and see how much play there is on your drive shaft. Sounds like it could be a worn GUIBO or u-joint. The GUIBO is relatively inexpensive ($125) to replace but the u-joints are staked in to the drive shaft so that would require a new drive shaft ($900) or drilling out the old u-joint and installing a new one if you are even able to find a shop to do such a thing.

Thanks.

I went on my lunch break so he didn't have time to lift up the car - he only sat it in with me long enough for me to re-create the sound I was hearing. I'll have to lift it up sometime and inspect the driveshaft to see if we can narrow it down to either guibo or u-joint.

The BMW guy didn't sound too worried about it (said he's heard/seen a lot worse) so I'll just take my time in troubleshooting so I don't go for the most expensive fix right from the start. He did say the same thing about the u-joint - that I'd have to replace the whole driveshaft and it wasn't cheap.

I had the same engagement clank noise in my 04 545i MT back around 30k miles. I had the dealer look at it while in for service. The dealer said they replaced the rear differential under CPO warranty. I have that same noise again now at 100k. It was not made clear what the cause of the noise was or if it was even a problem. I didn't look into it since it was so early in my warranty period. I would like to know what it is and if it is a problem.

Methodsound, I'm glad you mentioned the word "warranty;" I forget that I still have one of those! I just looked through my contract coverage and it says:

"DRIVE AXLE: All internally lubricated parts; drive axle housing; ring & pinion gears; spider gears & side gears; bearings; bushings; spacers; yokes; axle shafts; drive shafts; carrier bearing; universal joints; center support bearing; CV joints (provided the boots are not torn or damaged). (Exclusions are CV joint boots)"

Looks like I have coverage, so I'm taking it back to the indy shop next Tues to have them do a full diagnostic and repair under warranty. I'll let you know what they find out and if their repair eliminates the noise so you know what to look for.

relative to you, where does it sound like the noise is emanating from?

At first it sounded like some loose tools in my trunk, but when I open my windows and listen more closely it sounds like it's almost directly below the center armrest area or maybe below the rear passenger seats. Definitely more toward the rear of the vehicle.

Rear differential is almost under rear seat.
If I were you, I'd get the rear differential checked out by a competent mechanic.

Thanks; I'll be sure to ask them to check out the rear diff when I drop it off on Tues.

I have this same noise when shifting from Park to Drive. Also when driving over bumpy roads something rattles inside the interior and it sounds just like this repeatedly and coming from the center console area.
