I dumped the 545 due to the the 5k in repairs needed and stepped into a 08 550 w/ Sport trans and I am enjoying the move. I have been driving the car for 3 weeks or so and forgot about the charcoal filter in the air box and removed it. I used to run 1/4 mile cars and do not believe in the but dyno because I have been wrong many of times in the past so by no means do I think removing that filter caused the car to pull harder or give me any quicker times. What I have noticed is my MPG has gone up. I track my mpg by the trip and not by the MPG gauge. I have been filling up around the 250-260 mark with the DTE at about 50 or so but the last two tanks I was able to hit 275-280 before it hit that mark. Same routes and the weather has been consistent so I believe that is not an issue(no snow driving). I am pretty sure that I am not driving the car any different but maybe I am. Did anyone else see this.

Why in the world would you regret this post?

Anyway, congrats on the 550! Def a good move. I average around 20 mpg - but then again I live in the sticks, most of my driving is highway and not much traffic.

I have had the charcoal filter out since day two by the way.

I also drive a 08 550i and commute 60 miles a day. Your post interest me as I have not removed that filter yet I already get 19 mpg,
Did I see you stated it is located in the air box ? and I'll assume it's a easy process ?
I came out of a 740i with the 4.4 motor that I drove to 215K into this 550i sport with the 4.8 motor and already have 50K . love the power . I think you'll enjoy the difference.

There should be not regrets with an 550i LCI. Congrats.

Believe me I don't regret the move one bit. I thought my post would start a bashing thread or yea we know that is what the search button is for.

I removed the charcol filter on the 545 but I didn't see any results. I was a bit shocked that I saw a mpg gain with it removed.

FWIW, I have a 740iL and a 545i. The two engines could not be more different in design and performance. The engines in the 545i and 550i are not very far apart in performance from what I hear.

Also, can anyone tell me what the purpose is of the charcoal filter in the air box? BMW had a reason, just want to understand what BMW was thinking before I remove it.
