Okay so I owned a 2006 M3, and now that I need more room I sold it and looking at 5 series. I went to test drive the 535i and I liked it. They didn't have the 550i and the 550i with a CPO 2008 is more than I want to spend. Having a warranty is important to me.
This car has 35000 miles on it and was turned in on a lease. It hasn't had any mechanical HPFP problems or history of that. Is it safe to buy these cars. I know some people have been left on the side of the road, but are they really a nightmare?
Secondly it has everything I want, Premium, Sport, Xenon, etc but it doesn't have NAV? Is Nav expensive to add to the car, is there a away to use the OEM screen with anything aftermarket. If I chip the 535i will it potentially blow the engine and cause me to have to shell out 12k on an engine?
If anyone can help me that would be great. Yes I have looked a couple stories, but some say no problems. I test drove the 528i and that was horribly slow and boring (without sport package too)
The warranty goes until July 2013 and the HPFP will be until 2018, but I dont want to be left on the side of the road on my way somewhere ever.Is a car that hasnt had anything wrong with it in 35,000 miles safe. Will this be a nightmare in 2014 when the warranty is up.

I bought my '08 back in late '07. Currently have 30k miles on the clock. No mechanical problems whatsoever.
Note: when I bought the car in for scheduled service last year, THEY noticed the long crank and swapped the HPFP. I noticed the long crank too but assumed it was because the car sat in my garage for several days without being started. Just make sure you either get a CPO or aftermarket warranty if the current one is only good for 50k miles.
As for aftermarket NAV, the best and cheapest option is to get a Garmin. They do make a model that MAY interface with the LCD screen but you would have to talk to a pro installer to see if it could be done. Attempting a factory retrofit would be too expensive and BMW factory NAV is nothing to write home about.
You run the risk of potentially blowing a turbocharged motor if you run it hard PERIOD. It doesn't really matter if it's chipped or not. There are plenty of members here who have done or could recommend a good aftermarket tuner.
Good luck with your purchase!

I have had my 09 535iX for 6 months, and before that it was driven for 12 month's by a BMW Canada executive. It has been trouble free and now has 22,000 kms on it.They are great cars and I think you have to put the stories you hear in perspective. Most people who drive these cars are NOT having any problems, but if you are , you will of course sound off on a board like this.Buy it and start living!

I just bought a 2008 535xi sport, nav, premium, cold weather gray on gray 35,000 miles for 32k....Make sure you get a good deal. I see lots of these cars going for 37..38k. I am not buying extended warranty. I am taking 3k and putting it into a brokerage account to build value. If I need it due to a repair, then I will pull it out. If I never need it then I will pocket the money. warranty's are great piece of mind, but 800 for wheels and tires, 3500 for bmw extended warranty and 2100 for maintenance is 6k....for 6k you could have gotten into a whole different car...I would reccomend the tire and wheel insurance though especially if you are going to run 19's.
Also, be careful of this board...I have had my car less than 2 weeks and spent 3500 upgrading it to a m package, wheels, tint, spoiler etc...
