May '05 5 Series U.S. Sales Report
#1
May sales of the 5 Series were down a significant 16.7% compared to May of last year. YTD sales for the first 5 months of 2005 were literally even with last year as they were up a microscopic 0.7%.
By comparison, sales of the Mercedes-Benz E Class were down 29.1% with sales of only 3,569 units this month and 5,034 units last May. Sales of the MB E Class were also down 29.1% for the first 5 months of 2005.
Please note that I report only United States sales data.

....the only possible silver lining is that perhaps BMW NA will WAKE UP already and offer MORE OPTIONS to the US market for the E60?

Sales were possibly primarily down because the engine switchover.? So I do not think they will strt throwing in additional options just yet.

why would sales fall if the engines increased capacity/output? they DO need to offer more options

Because people are reluctant to buy the "old" model with the outgoing engine. I think Fred's numbers are deliveries, not orders, so the stats on the new engine cars will be showing up in future reports...right Fred?

hmmm.. i would think that with the amazing MF for the leases on the 545i for the last few months and the new engines for both the 525/530 and the addition of the Xi models, that the numbers would have jumped noticably

Actually, I think April was probably higher since a lot of new engine cars hit shores. The second wave of them is probably due this month - I haven't seen nearly as many "my car is here!" posts lately. I think it's a timing thing.

The new 3 series is getting fantastic reviews everywhere I read. Today's Wall St Journal as well as our local paper, the San Jose Mercury News, gave it great marks. I think BMW will see a lot of demand for this car over the next 6 months and their sales will pick up substantially.

sales were reported down for the entire auto industry in the US during the same period as reported in the media. that's why MB had similar drops in sales. these numbers are not reflecting design or features, rather the economy.
