Old. Long in the tooth. Creaky at times.

No, I'm not talking about Rudy ... I'm talking about the amazingly resilient E60. March 2009 sales of the 5 series were up 9.9% over the same month last year.

For the first quarter of 2009, E60 sales are down 9.8% while the industry is down 38% - and only 31 models out of the 263 models sold here in the U.S. have held up as well as the E60 has so far. Is there any other vehicle out there that is this close to being replaced selling as well? I don't think so.

BMW 5 series 10,890 units YTD -9.8%
Mercedes Benz E-Class 8,566 units YTD -32%
Infiniti M 4,757 units YTD -33%
Lexus GS 4,570 units YTD -54%
Audi A6 2,728 units YTD -40%
Jaguar XF 2,041 units YTD +76%

What's Hot
Pontiac G8 6,975 units YTD
Audi A5 1,754 units YTD +47%
Smart ForTwo 4,937 units YTD +40%

That's great news! But, are CPO sales figures included in this or is it strictly new car sales?

Always good to see + news on the E60. I think the most interesting numbers on this chart belong to the Z4. I wonder if those numbers are a reflection of a weak economy, or a combination of other factors. One could reasonably assume that people are not spending money on a second "fun" car, which has severly impacted sales in this product line. Anyway, I digress...back on topic. Fantastic news on the E60.

It probably also doesn't help that the Z4 replacement is coming out soon.

Thanks for posting tachyon.

That's almost impossible to believe, but the E60 is a very good car.

It's weird when a 9.8% drop is relatively good, but in these times, it makes you a winner.

These are new car sales only. The CPO figures typically come out about 10 days later each month. Last month BMW reported that CPO sales in Jan & Feb were 24% ahead of last year.

The reason why E60 sales were down so much less than all of its competitors save the new Jaguar XF is because it's the gold standard in the mid-sized sport sedan class (and therefore has a built in and loyal customer base such as those on this board) and because BMW had significant incentives on March purchases and leases of the E60 such as extending the $2,500 rebate to all purchasers and lessees -- not just returning BMWFS customers. And BMW gave generous lease/finance terms on the E60 in March with low money factors and high residuals on leases and low interest rates on purchases.

For me, it was actually cheaper (signficantly cheaper) to lease a $71,000 BMW 550i Sport than a $65,000 loaded Inifiniti M45 Sport due to BMW's rebate, low MF and high residual -- a total no brainer for me. Hmmm...the best car in the class for less $$ than an imitator/also ran car. I would think that others went through the same thought process that I did which is reflected in the March numbers.

No, they weren't. You're looking at the wrong thing.. Sales YTD were down 9.8% compared to Q1 2008, but sales for March 09 compared to March 08 were UP 9.9%.
