There are 7 DVDs for different parts of US. The one I have is for CA, HI, and NV, which is the west part of US.

The other day I was sitting in the car waiting for my girlfriend to come out of her house, that can take a long time  . I was playing with my NAV, I moved the map all the way to New York area and zoom in to 400ft. I can see detail NY streets and names. That's great  , so one DVD works for the whole US? Why BMW sell 7 different DVDs??

You may be thinking of the multiple CDs BMW (actually, NAVTEQ) sells for CD-based systems.

On the DVD system, it's one DVD for the whole country.

However, even the CD-based system had basic nationwide information on each regional CD. The DVD-based system has detailed information for the entire US on one disc.

I have a 06 E60, with the Map Data DVD box sitting right in front of me.

That's the CD set, not DVD. Map 1 (CA, HI, NV) is one of 7 US CDs.

There is only one DVD disc for the entire United States.

The CD sets are as follows:

Attachment 11206

The DVD is:

Attachment 11207

Yes. That's telling you all the areas the DVD has coverage in.

Why do they bother to split it up like that? Probably because it was an artifact of the way they used to split up the regions for CDs. But it's all on that DVD. There is only one, and you've got it.

Wow, I wish I could zoom across the nation. I can only zoom to current location. Am I possibly doing something wrong?

I am sure if you get the CIP upgrade to the newer version, you should be able to zoom into different areas.

DVD holds much more data than CD's. That is why one DVD covers the whole US.
