Personally, I only agree with a manual in either a truck, off-road SUV, or a 2 door sports car. Anything w/4 doors should get an auto. Just my opinion though.

If you're going to do lots of highway driving, choose the manual. If lots of town driving, then go for automatic.
I have a diesel with a manual gearbox and I'm happy with it, even in town.

The MT, SAT and Steptronic all work well on the E60. If you use the search function here, you will find many threads concerning the differences between Step and SAT. Since you are not looking at a M5 (where most critics prefer the SMG to the MT because the car was designed around the SMG with the MT coming later as a concession to the US market), the question really comes down to whether you like driving a manual, an automatic with steering wheel shift paddles or an automatic without steering wheel paddles.

So, dasdas, which type of transmission do you prefer driving and why? What have your previous cars had? Tell us about your prior experiences with AT vs manual trans in your prior vehicles. Where do you live? City vs country driving may play a factor in which trans you would like better.

What vehicle are you driving now and what kind of tranny does it have? And do you like that kind of tranny?

Finally, although off-topic, how did you come up with your user name. One of our admin's user names is das and yours is his times two. Is that a coincidence or did you think that das was such a cool user name that you felt compelled to double it up ?

I'd say get a manual. Manuals are also a LOT more reliable in the long run.

I would only get what YOU are comfortable with. Having said that, it is a sad fact that the art of MT driving is quickly disappearing in the USA, so if you live in the US, it would be best to get an automatic or SMG to get better returns on your trade-in or private sale. G/L

+1. A number of BMW dealers have told me that MTs are very very difficult to sell.

I have a MT 2007 530i and IMO it totally transforms the car. It happens to be one of the best MT/clutch systems I've had in a BMW and I'd highly recommend it if you're inclined toward a MT. You will feel totally connected to the machine.

If you're not a MT lover, listen to all the others and just get an auto. 99% of all the 5s are autos, so why be different? But then, you might as well get a Benz

Contrarian opinion here.

I listed my 2001 530i/MT car for sale on Christmas week, probably the hardest week of the year to sell a 5 year old used car. I had my buyer in one day, and over the ensuing 2 months, I had quite a few calls inquiring about the car (after it was sold to that buyer of course).

True, the market for these cars is thin and you can't trade it to a dealer, but your car will be rare, and those few buyers out there won't have many other cars to choose from.

If you lease a car, this whole thing does not become an issue. If you buy it, just get what you really want and don't worry about selling it. You'll find your buyer when the day comes.
