is this maintenance I can handle?
Hey everybody, I had my car aligned several months back at the local bmw dealership and they gave me a list of issues that I have been fixing along and have come to some that I'm unfamiliar with:
Remove and replace valley pan, water pump gasket, crossover tube (short), intake gaskets x4, front cover gasket, rear cover & gasket
I also have a slight oil leak, need to get it in the air and take off the paneling and look, but apart from that could one of those gaskets be the issue there?
I've done everything else I could do so far and i'd like to do these if it's not worth $1000 at the shop.

The internal water passage on the V8 engines is a known trouble spot.
Here is a link to a video of a professional repairing the problem. It is a lot of work.

Same problem BMW has on all the V8 engines, they should definitively review the design.
I did it on several M62, but basically the same design/flaw. It does take a lot of time but not really hard to do if you are a good mechanic, patient and label/bag everything.
The $1000 question is: how confident are you doing it? Have you done engine work before?

Thanks for the word guys. I have only really worked on a couple small engines so I am not necessarily confident doing this in particular, but I am confident that I could be thorough and get it apart. I would really like to get experience with work like this but I am concerned it would be a sort of trial by fire.
I think i will go ahead and get into it, but before i get started is this something I could get guidance with here or will it probably be difficult to take pictures and explain? The video is great but I am sure i will run into some issues getting it back together.

There is several write ups on the web, print them out and make sure that you label and tag your harnesses. Label and bag the hardware and you should be fine.
