Question M54 Vanos Seals done... CEL P0010 -- Camshaft Pos. Sensor? INPA shows 27B

Hey guys,

Car is a 2004 BMW 525i -- 160k mi. Recently repaired my VANOS seals...

During the repair, I do recall oil spilling onto the plugs/connectors for the exhaust camshaft pos. sensor, and the other plug that is next to it... I don't know if that could be the issue.

My iDrive also gave me an "increased emissions" warning.

P0010 = "A" Camshaft Position Actuator Circuit (Bank 1)
27B5 = Camshaft control, inlet bank 1-output stage -- can somebody help decipher what this exactly means?

I do want to add, on my initial test drive -- the car drove amazingly well. It felt as if it drove with more oomph. Better throttle response, more low-end torque, especially below 3k rpm.

The SES didn't show up until the second time I started the car...

Thoughts anybody?

Why not just remove them clean and reinstall?

I think that's what I'm going to do...

Any indication from these codes on which ones to try and clean? If it comes down to me having to replace the sensor themselves, I'd like to know which one specifically.

Also, what is a good cleaner to use on the plugs themselves? I have MAF cleaner, will that work?

Lastly, do I need to unplug the battery before doing so?

I was just making a suggestion, I am not familiar with that engine. I have the N62. What did you use to read the codes those codes seem generic? Just clean everything put them back make sure they are plugged in properly.

I used a standard OBD2 scanner to get the P code and I used INPA to read the error memory in the DME to reveal the other code.

I will try to clean tomorrow.

D'oh. I checked and I missed one plug -- the plug to the VANOS solenoid... Silly me.

CEL is gone -- but now I have a bunch of emissions monitors unset... I'm hoping that normal driving for a few hundred miles will help reset them.
