The M3 and M5 SMG is, in fact, more agressive. I can't really speak to the automatic mode because I've never driven the M3 in that mode.

Even though it's less agressive, the E60 SMG is still fantastic and tons of fun to drive...

Rudy--it's good to finally put a face with a name...

I didn't think you would look like that...you know, like when you see a pic of a radio personality, and you think...I didn't think he looked like THAT!!!!

A follow-up question on SMG...

When you come to a complete stop, do you downshift until you are in neutral just before coming to a complete halt? Or does the car just know you have stopped and so automatically hold the clutch disengaged? And then to start up again do you just hit the gas and click it into first?

I can imagine how up- and down-shifting works once you are in motion, but I can't quite figure out how the stop and start works?

Thanks, Jon.

You only downshift into 1st. The car clutches to prevent stalling.

The M3 uses different smg as found in the e60...it's more agressive, trasmits more feel, and as far as i know a bit quicker.

They are different.

The E46 M3 SMG is technically "SMG II" and has 5 different automatic drivelogic settings -- A1 to A5. It also has 6 different manual drivelogic settings - S1 to S6. S6 is selected by turning off DSC.

The E60 SMG is simply a second generation SMG gearbox, the second iteration that was first introduced in Europe for the E46 non-///M cars.

The E60 M5 SMG is technically "SMG III" which is a 7spd.

The automatic on both SMG II and the SMG on the E60 suck, but no doubt the SMG II on the M3 is better -- less jerky and harsh.
