So I was driving today and pulled up to a light when I hear the dreaded chime... being that it was at least 85 degrees out I knew it was the stupid cold weather warning so I looked at my idrive only to see "Low Oil Pressure". I went into my idrive and it said something to the effect that I should shut off my engine immediately and call for a tow... it said major damage to the engine could occur. Being the idiot that I am, I figured it was like any other random warning... drive for a minute and if that doesn't work shut it down and restart. It went on a off for a few cycles. I pulled over and shut down. Opened the hood just to make sure nothing obvious was happening and then restarted her. After going on one more time it shut itself off and the warning never returned.

I hit the check engine button and it told me all was ok, and after getting to my destination and coming out a few hours later, I was able to drive 45 minutes home without the warning.

Is this of concern? It may be worth noting that I got a low oil warning a few weeks back and it told me to add a quart which I did...

Thoughts?

Hmmm... The fact that the warning went away makes me believe it might be a bad sensor. But when oil level/pressure is concerned, don't take any chances, get it looked at ASAP.

I am thinking its the switch/sensor as well... checked the oil level and its full - right where it needs to be. I will have to keep an eye on it and if it goes off again I will bring it to see what it may be.

Wow... would you believe it ended up being the oil cap?!?!

I noticed oil under the car so I took it right to a friend of mine who is a BMW tech... he put it up on the lift and removed the shield after noticing a decent amount of oil leaking. All indications were the upper part of the engine so I immediately start thinking valve cover gasket etc... nope, the damn oil cap. It has 2 metal tabs that were bent for some reason and therefore not sealing... cleaned it all up, replaced the cap and now good as new.

Glad to hear it was a minor issue!

I had Low Oil Pressure warning only when i drove on a decline into a steep garage. The warning later got worst and i noticing oil spray. My mechanic only charged me $10 for replacing switch/sensor. He said the senor is a old design from the early 90's.

Good Luck

Never simple...... I still have a small leak - thought the cap took care of it. I will have to check the switch/sensor... what is the location of this switch that seems to give everyone an issue??

The one that normally leaks on the 545i is under the vacuum pump and is only $15 at the local parts house.
