I have seen various references to oil consumption being normal on the 535 on this forum. The N54 is just a different animal.
Agreed....even read a few threads on e90 posts regarding the 335i (same engine platform), same topic...

New 6,000 miles ago my 535xi now tells me I am one quart of oil low. Could I be using 1 quart of oil every 6,000 miles? I can find no leaks. What is par for this engine? Should I be losing sleep over this?
You may not have used a quart of oil. I got the low oil message on my new 09 535 when it was 3 mos. old and had about 4k on it, and I added a quart. I then checked the oil level and saw it was at max but I remember when I first got the car it was not as high and having no point of reference I thought it was at max.

The point I am making is my car was not completely filled with oil when I got it new with 6 miles. That may have been the case with your car.

Thanks for that perspective. I hadn't thought that it may not have been "full" when it arrived here from Deutschland in June 2008.

Patrick- Not sure if your question related to the 740 or the 535. On the 740 about every 5,000 using Mobile One. On the 535 never because it is brand new and has only 6,000 miles on it.

I just went to the dealer who told me it is normal to use 1 quart every 5-6K miles. He said the X-5s average about 2 quarts between oil changes. I can't imagine why I am not smoking like a chimney... He added the 5-30 quart at no charge.
Of course not being able to check the oil with a dipstick, at replacement, leaves the technician guessing that he/she put in the correct amount of oil and no means to really check. My tech told me that BMW is bringing back the dipstick in the new engines.
