It is easy to drain the radiator, especially if you have an older car with an actual drain plug. My 2006 has a drain plug. Wife's X5 you need to remove the lower radiator hose and that is a bit messier.
If you have the electric water pump, follow the bleeding procedure - you can hear it working, so you'll know if you got it started.

The car will "self-bleed" with the old fashioned water pump. This is the procedure in the bentley manual and it was pretty straightforward on my 550i:
Fill up to max in expansion tank, leave the cap off, turn the engine on and put the HVAC on full heat at low fan speed, add coolant as needed to keep the stick at the max, then after a minute of the engine running, put the cap on and keep running the engine until it's full operating temp (100*+ C). When the engine cools down, check the level and add if necessary.
