Loose fitting valve cover gasket n62
What's up everybody,
Have a question I'm hoping the community can advise me on. I'm in the process of replacing my valve cover gaskets on my 08 550i. Everything going fine, however I noticed the new valve cover gasket fits rather loose on the cover. I purchased a vgc kit from Victor Reinz. Cleaned the vcg good, is it normal for a new gasket to fit rather loose? Kinda falls off while I'm turning it upside down. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/5series...36cfbb81ac.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/5series...e875d0e6e4.jpg |
Ya....that makes it a little difficult to install. Mine where kind of loose when I did mine earlier this year.
I think I saw it on somebody’s posts or maybe on YouTube video, but I put some rtv gasket maker in random spots between the gasket and the cover and let it dry a little over night. It helps but still had a tough time installing those suckers! Just make sure the gasket is seated properly before tightening. I had a hard time with the passenger side when installing. The gasket kept wanting to fall off. After a lot of cussing and a few deep breaths I got it on and no more oil leak! |
I like to use 3M 847 adhesive in a few strategic spots to tack the gaskets in place if they're being a pain. There's an old mechanic's trick of tying the gasket to the cover with dental floss, then remove the floss once the part is seated.

Update
Went to a auto part store & picked up a bottle of Permatex Gasket maker.
Put alittle between the sides of the cover to keep the gasket in place & it worked!! Gaskets are on!! I just tightened the last cover bolt on the passanger side. Thank you for your advice!! Stoked to get this done. I'll post an update after putting everything back together & getting it back on the road. |
