My Ride: 2008 BMW 550i M Sport
Thumbs down

Hi Everyone!

It took me long but I have finally found some time to share this with all of You! i went to a kinda long trip in my 545 this month. It was actually a 4th of July weekend, so I went with my wife and my 6 month old baby to Colorado for a trip. Like I sad we own a 545i so I really wanted to check it out in the mountains as there are not very many demanding roads here in Chicagoland. It is a long trip about 1000 miles one way plus whatever I put inm Colorado itselfso about 3000 miles overall. The car was just fantastic!!!!!!!!! The ride was not tiring at all, and quite comfortable even with sport package I 'd say 5series is a perfect car for a long trips. I put my stroller in the trunk I have put 2 suitcases plus a lot of different small stuff i was impressed with the ammount of luggage I was able to fit in. ride was quite comfortable. I was actually able to drive all the time. I hate VANS and SUV's of any kind. I will not buy one NEVER EVER!!!!!! In my opinion this is only a matter of organising and picking the stuff You reallly need with You to go on the trip. So thats said. fro me and my wife this car is more than enough to go for a long trip. If anybody took it's beemer for a 3000 miles trip let me know what were Your experiences! All I can say that it worked out just fine and that it really is a lot less powerfull than it is in Illinois... And there it is a one more thing I was really suprised with it. It was a gas milage I have done an average of 26.4 mpg. not bad at all... Anyway great forum great guys here !!! kEEP UP A GOOD WORK.

That's a good thing to know because I usually use my X5 for long road trips. I used my 325 when I drove to Syracuse from NYC (about 6 hour drive) and I did not like it very much at all compared to the X5. Now don't get me wrong, the E90 was pleasant but did get a bit tiresome about 4 hours in. I had to stop at a service area to take a break and just stretch out. With the X5, I never really had that problem even when I drove down to Florida and back. I'm glad the new 5 I'll be getting this week will be fine.

Ah, your gas mileage is alot different than on my 535xi. I'm usually around the 18 mpg mark on highway driving, but I guess it isn't fully highway driving as the busy street does have a couple of stop lights before it goes on for 10 miles as a mini-highway. Still, it bothers me that on city driving im doing some 15.8 mpg.

I live in NYC and from the looks of it, it's not actual MPH because the best I got so far from like Belt Parkway is like 20MPG. When I went up to Boston with my 325, it jumped up to about 25MPH. MPH = Mileage Per Highway in my case so people don't get confused. I also understand how you feel when you're disappointed because when you go to forums like these, people in the UK or countryside, seem to get heck of a better mileage. People stating 31MPG and some are even complaining at that . It's just not fair sometimes.

I drove my 550 from Vancouver, Canada to San Francisco. Down the coast highway and back up on the I5. So effortless and enjoyable to drive a great touring car!
I usually under use my miles allotted on my lease, so when my M5 lease nears the end I plan to "burn up the miles" with a good road trip!

Glad to hear you enjoyed your trip. We just got back from a two week 4500 mile trip last weekend in our 2006 530i. Drove from central PA to Colorado and Utah. Fantastic trip. I enjoyed every minute of the drive out and back. Tried to stretch the mpg on the trip back and from the continental divide on I-70 in Summit County Colorado to our house here in PA we got 32.4 miles per gallon. And that was with the cruise control set on 82 mph all across Nebraska and Iowa. A little slower east of the Mississippi but still above 65. I couldn't complain about that at all.
