In the instruction manual BMW recommends Castrol LL-04 oil. Digging around the net this oil was developed to maximise the diesel particle filter. Only problem not available at Halfords or the like though LL-01 is.
Contacted Castrol UK and they informed oil was not available to general retail but only through BMW. So of to the BMW dealer. Only problem is they only stock LL-01. When I told him about the LL-04 he went away for a while and checked, came back and said the technician said it was ok to use LL-01. I said no thanks as I could buy LL-01 for 2/3rds the price at Halfords. Strange thing is on the dealer?s computer system it shows no stock of LL-04 in the UK at all.
Sent an e-mail off to BMW UK and got a reply several days later with a list of recommended oils and that they were not aware that Castrol only sold LL-04 through them (BMW UK).
Question is if they have no stock of LL-04 oil what they use when they service the car. May not be an issue if you only do 20,000 miles a year but I do 45,000 per year and I want to look after the particle filter.

LL-04 is very new and not easily available yet
Your engine can run on LL-01
You may find it easier to find teh new Mobil 1 Low emision formaula 5W-30 ( Its known as Mobil 1 ESP in many places, just look on the back for LL04 approval) which is also LL-04 approved
The current LL-04 approved oils are
Castrol TXT LL04 5W-30
Castrol SLX LL04 0W-30
Mobil 1 Low emmision Formual 5w-30
