First post on this site and I have to say not the happy one I was expecting! Can anyone help?
I have just bought a 535d e60, 04 plate and collected it this weekend but about an hour into driving it the car went into 'limp home' mode.
I pulled over turned off the engine, restarted and it was fine. Another 20-30 miles it went into limp home mode again, as before pulled over, restarted the car and it was fine again?
Its done it 3 times now and each time is fine after restarting.
To qualify no lights come up on the dash and the idrive is not reporting any errors?
Obviously I am very worried and just wanted to see if anyone has any similar experiences?
I am having it put on a diagnostic tester next week to see what shows up but would value any input from people on the forum.
Thanks in advance.

Hi
It was a private sale and sorry I ment 2004! Doh!
However I did my due dilligence. The car has full main dealer history, all receipts/stamps etc and was owned by the same guy for the past 5 years who genuinely seems to have looked after it very well and said it has been fine all the time he has owned it. To be on the safe side I even had a full independent inspection on the car before I bought it which included a 10 mile road test and it passed with flying colours!
As its private sale I guess there is no recourse and I dont have a warrenty so just hoping its a trivial issue and nothing major.

You have a diesel so i have no clue...i can tell you I had limp mode on other BMWs that were related to fuse issue in engine compartment and a Mass Air FLow Sensor blown.
First, check the battery.....
Second,.... of course if that doesn't fix the isuse. I would say to drain the tranny fluid and make sure to fill it up with OEM spec fluid....don't be cheap and make sure it's done correctly.
Safe mode aka limp mode is usually a minor issue. Just track it down.

My Ride: 04' 545i, Sport Package, Black, Active Xenon, ARS, Aux Input
'10 Tahoe, Black on Black, leather, Nav/XM, 20" tires, full body kit, power 2nd row, loaded
'93 Jeep Wrangler, lifted 4.5", 33" meats, Rampage Recovery Bumper w/Tire Swing, etc
25' Aquasport Osprey, Center Console,2012 200 HO Etec
My limp home mode started out looking like an MAF sensor, and ended up actually being a DME... not very serious, but it goes into Limp Home Mode so you dont damage anything further. Get it checked!

I've had a limp mode due to high pressure fuel pump and another limp mode on a separate occasion from DME, those are the only two I've personally gotten it from.
