Like I said, I'm pretty sure it's the socket for the diagnostics computer.

I belived there is a socket underneath a plastic lid near the driver's door. Wouldn't that be the socket for the diagnostic equipment?
I have something what looks like a socket on the left side of the glove compartment, but there is a plastic cover over it.
I don't know if there is a socket underneath and doubt it is...
That's probably it. Remove the plastic cover and the pins / socket should be there. On UK cars, the torch is on the right side of the glovebox as we're right hand drive. So I guess for LHD cars it will be on the left as in the photos here.
Yes. Plastic lid by driver's door is the socket for the diagnostic equipment. I picked up my car one tiime and the lid was still open. Obviously this was where they plugged in the laptop etc for Car Memory programming.

The torch socket was used for updating the software, so it could be that the diagnostic and software sockets are seperate.

Same thing in my e46.. The US car's had the socket and my car didn't, it had the plastic cover over it. Speaking of wich. I didn't have the trunk open button at the left side in the dash.

The diagnostic computer has it's socket on the left in the drivers footwell, and the socket in the glove compartement, what is covered with a plastic that I can't remove without breaking the thing, is the one for the torch...
Not available in Germany, as well as the button to open the trunk from the drivers seat...

I don't understand why we don't have that button. It's really handy to use. I can live without the torch but the button would be very nice (even as a retrofit but in my E46 there was no wiring behind the plastic thingie for it)

I'll try to clear up the confusion as to what diagnostic sockets are where.

The following shows the location of the MOST port for programming the car:
