That's the most stupid thing BMW link that LED light to i-Drive
After installing CIP 20.x, headlights might be out  :wow:

It is not a tie to iDrive pe se, but it is software encoded. As is SMG and Step tranny, Engine controls, Active steering, to name a few. It allows BMW to software control things that might be county specific such as Brake Force Display (BFD) that for awhile was not certified for use in some countries. Yea, something could go wrong, go wrong, go wrong, go wrong, oops :nono:, but still adds flexability without having to change production line process.

The LED's came back already with 18.1.

Btw, *every* electrical item (can't think of any exception but the rechargeable flashlight...) on the E60 is triggered by the numerous computers! Thats virtually the case with all modern cars today.

iDrive is only the user input-/output interface (knob & display(s-) and is basically only gathering & presenting information for the driver. If iDrive fails, you cold continue driving, but if the computer controlling the fuel flow stops - the car will stop. This is also the case in a modern airliner, but there are often up to seven (7) back up systems for vital functions. I'm not sure if BMW has back up systems for any of the critical "potential stoppers". Anybody know?

What version did you have previously? CIP17 I presume?
