Just noticed a new Honda Accord today with LED taillights. Is the E60 scheduled to get them in the next model year?
I noticed some older 3 series cars with LEDs, but the new ones have the old-fashioned bulbs.
Does anyone care? I think the LEDs are really distinctive -- something you'd expect on a BMW, not a Honda! I'm jealous.

Ya I care! But what can you do? Grrrrrrrrrr BMW is reserving the LED brake lights for their face lift... watch I BET you the 5 will get it in 2008. Thats when its scheduled for a face lift.
I mean theyprobably already designed everyting at the beginning and is saving it for a certain time to release it so they can gain MORE sales... just like the engines for 2006. "LOOK Kiddies... you're getting a MUCH better deal than those people that we screwed the fisrt two years come buy our cars now."

Lots of pictures.
And yes, LED tail lamps will probably come with the facelift. The original dealer training manuals for E60 actually even refer to LED tail lamps, so they probably changed it at the last minute. But I wouldn't say BMW is "reserving" them for the facelift, since 99% of 5 Series owners couldn't possibly care less. I just hope there aren't any body panel changes that would affect the shape of the lights, so that current 5 Series owners could just retrofit them (as was the case on E39).

My Ride: '04 545iS 6 spd, bought new via eBay, 11/05; Blk/Gry, Cold, L7, PDC, BMW Rear seatcover for pets.
First "Bumwa" was a new 1971 2002. High performance 5s since 1987. Beamer motorcycles too, currently on an 07 BMW K1200 GT; also a Moto Guzzi 1000 SP III.
Well, we already have some, in the high-level brake warning light over the rear window. Be thankful for small favors.

Actually we should care. There are significant benefits (cost and safety) to having LED tail lights. It's not just a matter of esthetics. This article on MSNBC.com accurately decribes them. More car manufactureres are moving towards installing LED tail lights. Eventually so will BMW.

Agreed! what an a$$ move by BMW. Even the old E46 coupes had LED tailights. Little things like this tick me off even though the car is great as a whole...why can they never finish it off right?!
The little Honda Civic has MP3 capabilities right from the start, too..
