Thumbs up

I noticed on the USA BMW site that you can opt for leatherette. Why would you want to buy plastic seat trim for a BMW unless you have a PVC fettish?
Are there any benefits or is it just a cheaper alternative to leather?

cost is the main benefit, but I would think it is easier to clean and maintain than leather. Still wouldn't ever get it, but that's just me...

Just cheaper

They are getting it as the base seats on the E90 instead of the Cloth Europe gets

From AUTOBYTEL

"Leatherette (vinyl) upholstery is standard on the 2006 BMW 3-Series, with leather offered as an option. Real burl walnut wood trim is included, with optional aluminum or poplar natural wood available to decorate the cabin."

Plus, from what I hear... Leatherette is virtually indestructable or very durable.

Also, some people are allergic to the dye in the various leathers. Or if people have pets that are going to be parading around on the seats, might be better to have leatherette...
But nowhere near as nice looking as keather, plus doesnt feel nice at all...

cheers

BMW's Leatherette is top quality and difficult to tell it's not leather! Unless you see them both side by side.

A choice in the US if you don't order leather or the Premium package.

As far as replacement after warranty leather is a few hundred more compared to "pleatherette".

There is no substitute for the smell of the Dakota Leather. Ive driven all types of leather-seated vehicles, and the BMW Dakota Leather has the best leather smell. Some people do not care, but that details means a lot to some of us. My 2 cents.

According to the sales guy at the dealership, leatherette is much more durable and heat resistant and it will not show cracks as Leather does with the years.

I think some people don't like the thought of riding around on the skins of dead animals as well. Not me, I like it.

Yes me too! Can't get leatherette in the UK which is a shame. Having read all the posts it sounds better than the leather in terms of looks and value. My dakota grey drivers seat looks like the cars done 100,000 miles.

I once owned a Ford Probe with so called leather which turned out to be 80% plastic.
