I thought I would share with you some recent mpg figures from my 525d:

423 miles

trip computer 40.9 mpg, calculated 39.6mpg (33mpg US, 7.13l/100km)


276 miles

trip computer 43.4mpg, calculated 42.17mpg (35mpg US, 6.7l/100km)

This also tells me the computer reads about 3% high.

The above journeys are based on mixed driving but with a high percentage of motorway cruising at an indicated 75 mph. It is also based on me going a bit easier on the "gas" than usual.

Since filling up last night and the journey into work, the trip computer shows;



Which allowing for the trip computer error is about 44mpg (36.6mpg US, 6.42l/100km).

BMW claim 43.5mpg on the combined cycle.

I've now done 10000 miles (total 122000 on the car) in my 530D. Calculated consumption in that time has averaged 39mpg (UK) with trip computer overreading by around 2-4mpg (5-10%).

My best displayed range post-fillup has been 747 miles although I rarely actually achieve 600. Just depends if I've been driving very gently for the 20 miles or so before fillup (believe it uses around a 20 mile average for range).

Gotta love them diesels .

Edit: note mine is a manual, which is better than the auto by 10%, according to the official figures.

I also have an LCI 525d - mine is a manual though (end of April 07). Car has now covered just over 18k miles. Fuel consumption has remained reasonably consistent throughout.

Urban driving averages around 36 mpg (this is actually above the quoted urban figure of 34.4 mpg).
Mixed driving usually returns a minimum of 40 mpg, although this is usually in the region of 42-43 mpg.
Motorway driving dependant largely on the speed as you would expect returns around 45 mpg average. However, if I stick to 70 mph on cruise over a large distance my car will return 49-50 mpg. Cruising at 60 mph (only done this on a few occasions to prove a point) will return around 54 mpg.

Last year I went to Le Mans (a return trip of approx. 1000 miles). There were two of us cruising together, in no rush, so we stuck to 70 mph, my car returned 49.5 mpg over that distance which was excellent! These cars are something else when it comes to economy vrs performance balance. Not the fastest and not the best economy, but when you combine the 2 I think they make a really good compromise between the two factors.

Edited to add that all my quoted figures are from the on board trip computer, so obviously a factor needs adding for error here.

 

Anyone got anything similar to the posts above but for a 520d LCI please?

163BHP 520D Auto returns (from computer data) 42-44MPG in mixed town / main road driving & 48MPG at 130 - 140 KPH on motorway trips.
Have pushed it towards 50MPG at times by driving like a granny :-)

 

I have got a 520d LCI and it is with the new engine introduced in Sep/Oct 2007. Frankly I am disappointed with the mpg which averages out at about 38-40mpg with a mixture of town and motorway driving. What are your figures.

 

I have a 525d SE Auto, and over the last 4000 miles since new the average is 41 mpg. It started lower, but has been gently increasing as the miles go on.

I have done more crusing about than town driving, but have been enjoying myself and make progress as required if you know what I mean.

 

Very nice MPG figures. I've been happy with the 27 MPG (US gallons) in my 550i. That was on a long highway trip with easy 70mph cruising. BMW diesels are finally coming to the US but in the 3 and X series only. I'd much prefer a BMW diesel getting 45-50 mpg over a hybrid economy car any day. Although a luxury hybrid such as the Lexus GS450 is tempting (but not worth it over a BMW V8).

 

Something seems wrong here to me. My 525d easily acheives & betters these figures and without driving purely for economy. If you compare the emmissions figures & thus fuel economy figures between the new 520d & 525d you should be getting noticably more than me? Is yours an auto?

 

I have a 520d SE. Manual. Pre LCI by a few months.

If I worked at the place I did a few years back, which is 6 mile to and fro trip, (still drive there sometimes) it would have done approx 37mpg. This is because of the short nature of the journey.

I now have a 50 mile each way commute. This is mainly dual carriageway and free flowing A class roads. This time of year i average about 43, in the summer i get 47 - 49 mpg for the same journey.

Last week, I had to do a trip from Northamtonshire to chester. Thats 155 miles each way, mostly motorway class roads. I did (but i couold be making it up officer ) approx 80 - 85mph most of the way. Journey up, got 47.8mpg. Without resettting, after journey back, it just touched 50.4 mpg.

Journey distance and air temp seem to be a major factor. Anyone buying a diesel of any make and using it on short trips will i think be universally dissapointed.

Im suprised at the mpg of the 525 - when i bought my car the dealer wanted to sell me a 525 at almost the same cost as the 520d as it counted towards his sales allocation budget. I explained my journey and he readily said the 525 wouldnt be for me......

My mpg counter came out approx 10% optimistic until i recalibrated it with info from this site


PS - Just noticed that the original posters 525 would be the detuned 3litre (LCI) and not he one i would ave been offered - the 3 litres doing even better than the 2.5 is suprising
