Nothing weird about it . . . to a dwindling few of us, we can only feel truly connected to our cars by do-it-yourself shifting. I've never really cared that advanced automatics or SMGs can shift a few miliseconds quicker than I can. I just find real joy in nailing that perfect 5th-to-3rd downshift and then accelerating and shifting back up through a corner.

As I've said in earlier posts, it's similar to being a motor-boater versus a sail-boater. I prefer the challange of sailing. Just what's right for me . . .

Very nice - brings back my memories standing in that very place. I thought they opened the new delivery center by now? Fantastic ride! Enjoy your trip.

I removed the CDV on my 545 as well. I think I'll have to do it with this car as well, but I want to drive it a bit more first.
Entschuldigen Sie, bitte.

What's a CDV?

-----------------------

(As for people not universally selecting an ED, it wouldn't have anything to do with money and time, would it?)

hinckley, if you dont mind me asking, what did it cost you to do the ED and did you save at least that much on the price of the car itself? Looks like fun.

Thx and all the best

CDV = Clutch Delay Valve. Although I don't necessary understand the mechanics, it is a part which helps fuel economy, but has the side effect of delayed and therefore jerky manual shifts. The part is easily replaceable (I think I had an aftermarket guy do it for about $150) and makes a noticable improvement in the smoothness of shifts.

I'm intrigued.

Like you, I prefer a MT...

...and, I'm replacing a 95 540i that has a MT as well. (It's the best car I have ever owned.)

I never noticed any issues with delayed/jerky shifts in the 540i. (I've never owned a car without an MT in 35 yrs of driving.)

Maybe the CDV wasn't part of the whole mechanism at that time.

Do you know?

I had a 95 and a 99 5er in my 30 years of manual-transmission car ownership. Neither had a CDV. Coming out of the 99 and into my first E60, I was very, very disappointed with the new car's manual transmission - both because of the CDV and comparatively long shifts. The CDV issue was easily fixed, but I didn't resolve the E60's long shifts before I got an LCI 550 with the sport package's new short-throw shifter. It's the best thing about the new car and brings it much closer to my beloved 99 540.

But have you performed the CDV surgery on the new one. I need feedback. I will drive it for the first 5-600 miles before making my decision.

P.S. The CDV cannot possibly improve fuel economy. I think its designed to prevent clutch slippage. By reducing the contact point and control the clutch pedal has over the clutch plate/flywheel. Which is great if you are BMW and offer a warranty on the transmission, but not if you are an experienced 2 footed driver. A good driver can easily keep a clutch for 70,000 miles before replacing it. A bad driver can, with 360+HP at the flywheel can burn out a clutch in 10 minutes.

I don't not believe the E39 had a CDV until 1997

There you go . . . I knew someone would understand the mechanics better than I . . .

I haven't removed the CDV yet . . . I haven't even taken re-delivery of mt car yet You'll see my other post.

As far as a CDV from 97 on, I'm quite sure that my 99 E39 did not have one.

OK read your other post. What is up. Your dealer should be able to tell you where the car is and therefore what the hang up is. It cannot possibly customs, so its proprobably VPC repairs. Insist that they call and find out for you. It is part of their consignment so they have a right to know. My car was held up a week after ED in 2004. Turns out they were replacing a wheel that bashed against a curb in Florence.
