Driving last night after putting gas in my car - I looked down and noticed nothing was working on the console.
The speedometer / tach / fuel / and center LCD were all shut off.
Pulled over, turned off the car & restarted - everythign was A OK. Has anyone had this experience? it was very disheartening.
Excuse my spelling

Happened to me once. I think the speedo and rev gauge were still operating but it was too dark to see -- sorry officer my "computer" went nuts and turned off all the lights, I coudn't see how fast I was driving.
Anyhow, I tried the "pull over and restart" but that didn't cure it. I actually had to wait until the car went into sleep-mode and after that it was OK again.

The following day, on my way to New York, same thing, after about an hour's worth of driving. This time, it took longer than 5 minutes...roughly about 10 minutes maybe.
I have yet to read a post about this if not similar, thought I'd share it with you guys. My car has about 9k miles, Sep 03 build. Will post on results or corrective actions taken by the dealership/BMW.
gonzo
it took another software upgrade to correct the problem, dealer had the car for 2 days. i've driven about 2.5k miles since, no problems! good luck.

I had this happen to me in October, but the instrument cluster never recovered, and I had to wait three weeks for a new one to arrive from Germany. Since instrument cluster was replaced about a month ago, I have had no further problems with it.

I had exactly the same problem a couple of days ago. Instruments were dead and the HUD displayed "--- km/h".
I let the car stand for an hour, and then all was OK, but the "trip-meter" was reset to "0000 km"
My car is a 545 built feb 2004. "Original software" I do not know the software version number.

Yer lucky. Mine did that once. Then it started cycling the BMW screen for five seconds, blank for ten seconds, and repeated that forever -- currently in the shop in the hands of the unknowing.
