Depends on your car....and location on which Software is available...( hint: post type of car and location in your avatar and Sig areas )

As previously stated , most of the Software updates from BMW are dealing with issues that have come up.

If you have a N54 motored car a lot of the "updates" are dealing with it (turbos/ wastegates/lag/HPFP)
some are for updates to iDrive
Some are for other issues with the radio or Blue tooth.

My 530Xi T is getting reprogrammed right now , 9/10 of the reprograms are for /part of warenty issues and give no performance gains. Exception is the 32.x+ for MDS 80 ecus on the N54's (pre march 08 production 535i/x) before version 29.2 there was no lag, people complained to bmw , then they have released software patches to try and fix the issue...

Same with the transmission slam, across the board...

Newb question: How do I find out what version of the software I am currently running?

There are hidden menus in iDrive , but it depends on your model and build year...
