holding it near your head works!! just place it next to your chin and press the button, youll see the range is a lot bigger.

It does actually work! It's something to do with the shape of your skull amplifying the signal, apparently

I have the same promblem with my other bimmers stellar remote unless i place the key to my chin it will not unlock the doors, it has to do with the antenna effect you in essence take on the mast of a antenna thus being higher distance is increased.

And I always thought it worked because I was saying "opening the darn door" inside my head when doing that.

I thought I had that telepathy with my E60.

Your skull cavity acts as a re-radiator of the RF signal. Provides multiple direction and adding signals. Similar in some ways to the TV remote that does not have to be aimed directly at TV to work. I can point at wall opposite of the TV and get reflection/bounce off multiple points to reach TV.

FCC does have some limits on RF signal frequencies and power for "intentional" radiators such as our remote keys. On a practical level I can unlock/lock car much further than I can lower windows.

I too have noticed the fall off in remote operation distance . When new, I could open and close from 200 feet through a window. Now, after 1.5 yrs, I have to be within 30 feet and 50 if I use my head .
You say it's the antenna connection?

Well color me surprised I told my wife about placing the key next to my skull idea and she nearly died laughing! I told her that I thought this to be some kind of urban legend or something, but.... that we should go ahead and try it just to be sure. Lo and behold... it worked! We both laughed pretty hard at this ridiculous activity. At best this is a bandaid fix... I need to know why when I took delivery of this car the key would work nearly a block away... now I have to be literally on top of the car to unlock it ... or hold the darn key next to my skull! Could it just be that the keys are no longer taking a charge from the car and eventually they will lose all of their memory? Still sounds like an issue for the dealer.

Try this...next time you are out of range, hold the key against your head and try again.? Bet you it works!!!!?

It does work. Volvo 850's remote has the same short distance problem. The work around is to place the remoter next to the head or chin. It works everytime.

First time I did it, was by total fluke. I was carrying a heavy bag and was juggling my keys in the other hand. I tried to open the car in advance of dumping the heavy bag and it wouldnt open...all of a sudden I felt the urge to sneeze so I lifted the fob up to my face with my free hand to cover my mouth for the sneeze (I had stopped walking at this time so hadnt closed the range on the car,) as I did this I pressed the open button by accident at the bloody doors opened.

I stood for five minutes Bags down and played with the concept...amazing!!!

Thats how I realised that my head was infact an antenna of some kind.

How did you guys find out???
