When I first picked up my car the remote on the key would lock/unlock the car from quite some distance. The car is now 5 months old and I have to literally hold the key right at the drivers door within 12" for it to work. I tried using the spare key and had the same result. Any ideas as to why this is happening? It seems to be getting weaker every day. I know the key also holds memory for a variety of things... are they going away also? :'(

Well, the spare might just be low on juice - the keys need to be cycled so that they don't die (internal batteries). That doesn't account for the bad performance with your "regular" use key though. I'd mention it next time it's in for a service.

It actually does work. The remote on Carreras has horrible range, and one day I experimented and found it doubled the range when you did that (even doubled range was less than on my 545i!).

If it's any help... my car has had this problem and BMW GB initially changed the antenna amplifier located in the rear headlining and also the fin aerial. Same problem after this warranty work...

Car has been in whilst I've been away and they put in a new rear windscreen last Friday. Apparently, the problem is now solved. Look like it was defective pickup elements in the rear windscreen itself.

Will test it out later this week.

I thought I was the only one on this forum with this problem...

Your key shouldnt be doing that unless u dont drive the car a lot, because every time your driving the car the battery in the remote is suppose to be getting charged, have your dealer look at it.

Am I being naive or gullible? How does holding it near you head work? Both keys are used about equally... and both have the extremely low range. Perhaps I should ask the dealer... This will be my first problem...
