Just got a 535d Sport. Question about upgrading Idrive
Hi
Great forum!
I just got an 18 month old 553d sport which is just the dogs. Does BMW have a policy on upgrading Idrive software? I'm not sure what version mine is but wold expect there have been some newer ones since my car was built. Can I just ask the local dealer to upgrade it FOC?

From what I hear the dealers will not upgrade it unless there is a fault as the process takes many hours which could be better spent on cars with "real" problems.
Besides I have heard too many horror stories about idrives misbehaving after upgrades. Mines slow but at least it works most of the time! If it aint broke etc etc....
If you can find a bug in the car that's related to cip then you can ask for it under warranty, when the E60 was new there were quite a few issues around that made this easy, I had mine done a few times.
By 2006 though I'd expect they had ironed out most of the bugs and as stated it might be better leaving well alone unless there is something specific you require.

Haliwell Jones in Warrington did mine and it now crashes at least once a week for which Im told there is no current fix.
In hindsight I wish I hadnt bothered and lived with the skipping tracks!

I had mine upgraded by the main dealer so that it would play mp3's. They updated it to 27 without a fuss and apart from the hefty bill to do it and the fact it was in the garage all day (it takes ages) it came back and I have had no issues.
There were some noticeable new features in the info settings and it recognises the DVD drive in the CD menu.
